How To Apply for Disability in Florida
Applying for Social Security Disability benefits in Florida is just like applying in any other state. This is because Social Security Disability benefit programs are federal and are provided by the United States government through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Even though each state follows the typical application process, there can be minor differences between states such as approval rates and state supplements. The following information is an overview of Social Security Disability in Florida.

File for Disability in Florida
As stated above, applying for disability benefits is similar within every state. There are three separate ways you can file for Social Security Disability benefits in Florida:
- Online: You can apply online at ssa.gov.
- Telephone: You can apply over the telephone by calling the SSA's toll-free customer service line at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778)
- In-person: You can apply in-person at your local Social Security field office. Find your local Florida office here.
Appeal Hearings in Florida
When an applicant is denied at the Request for Reconsideration stage of the appeals process, he or she has 60 days to file a request for a hearing in front of a Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). In Florida, there are 107 ALJs throughout the state who attend hearings within the 8 hearing offices. The citizens of Florida generally have to wait much longer (more than 3 months) for a hearing date or final decision compared to the national average. Below is information about Florida's hearing offices.
Florida | National | |
Avg. Hearing Wait Time | 18.2 Months | 14.9 Months |
Average Processing Time | 582 Days | 461 Days |
Cases Approved | 44% | 44% |
Cases Denied | 37% | 38% |
Cases Dismissed | 20% | 18% |
Florida State Supplements for SSI
The Social Security Administration (SSA) limits the amount of disability benefits an applicant receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can earn on a monthly basis. As of 2015, the maximum amount an applicant can potentially receive from the SSA is $733 per month. However, the majority of states in the U.S. offer state supplemental benefits to those who are already on SSI. The extra state benefits are meant to compensate people for the additional cost of living in a particular state.
Florida also offers state supplemental benefits through the Optional State Supplementation (OSS) Program but only for disabled people who are living in special non-institutional, residential living facilities, including assisted living facilities, adult family care homes and mental health residential treatment facilities. Otherwise, a claimant will not qualify for OSS.
State Statistics
Even though every state typically follows the same procedures for Social Security Disability, each state does vary in general statistics such as percentage of population disabled and the average payment amounts. The numbers below are for Florida from the state annual report of 2013 which was made public in December 2014.
Resident Population | 11,878,569 |
Percentage of Population on SSI | 2.8% |
Percentage of Population on SSDI | 4.9% |
Average Monthly SSI Payment | $509.59 |
Average Monthly SSDI Payment | $1,111.63 |
