How To Apply for Disability in Georgia
If you have one or more disabilities that prevent you from working, you may qualify for either Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Both of these programs are federally run by an organization known as the Social Security Administration (SSA), the same organization that also provides Social Security Retirement benefits. This means applying for disability benefits is typically very similar in every state. Here is an overview of information and resources about Social Security Disability in Georgia.

Georgia State Supplements for SSI
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is one of the disability programs that provides benefits to disabled, low-income individuals who don't have an extensive work history. The Social Security Administration (SSA) regulates the maximum amount a recipient can receive to $733 per month as of 2015. Although, recipients can potentially receive more through state supplemental benefits that are provided by the state in which they live in. These additional benefits are suppose to compensate for the additional cost of living within a certain state.
Georgia provides state supplemental benefits to SSI claimants through its Department of Human Resources (DHR). A claimant does not have to apply for the state supplement because Georgia's DHR tracks eligible applicants and automatically awards them the state benefits when they are approved for SSI benefits.
State Statistics
The Social Security Administration (SSA) releases statistical information through yearly reports known as the state annual reports. These reports are generally released in December and cover information from the previous year. The following information about Georgia is from the state annual report of 2013.
Resident Population | 6,306,503 |
Percentage of Population on SSI | 2.5% |
Percentage of Population on SSDI | 4.8% |
