How To Apply for Disability in Maryland

Applying for Social Security Disability in the state of Maryland is very similar to applying in any other state. This is because the two major disability programs, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), are federal programs run by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Here are the details concerning Social Security Disability in Maryland.

File for Disability in Maryland

If a citizen of Maryland is suffering from a disabling condition that prevents them from working, he or she may qualify for disability benefits. There are three ways one can file a claim for benefits:

  • Online: Apply on the internet through ssa.gov.
  • Over the telephone: Call the SSA's customer service line at (800) 772-1213.
  • In-person: Apply in-person at a local Social Security field office. Click here for a list of field offices in Maryland.

Applicants may also seek representation through a disability advocate or lawyer who will significantly increase their chances for approval. There are no out-of-pocket costs for using representation throughout the application process.

Chances of Approval at a Hearing

When an applicant is denied benefits at the reconsideration level, he or she may request for a hearing in front of a Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) to appeal the decision. The chances of approval during a hearing in Maryland is actually exactly the same as the national average. There are 34 certified ALJs that attend hearings in the 3 hearing offices within Maryland.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) regulates the maximum amount of federal benefits a recipient can potentially receive from Supplemental Security Income (SSI). As of 2015, the maximum is $733 per month for a non-married recipient. Although depending on the state, a recipient may qualify for additional state supplemental benefits with their SSI benefits. The amount an individual would receive depends on his or her current living arrangement. To find out how much you could receive given your living situation, contact Maryland's Department of Disabilities.
