How To Apply for Disability in New York
When a American citizen becomes disabled or is suffering from a disabling condition that prevents him or her from working, they can be eligible for one of the two main disability programs, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Both of these programs are federal and are run by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Due to this fact, most states follow similar procedures throughout the application process, but there can be minute variations between states. Here is an overview of Social Security Disability in New York.

Chances of Approval at a Hearing
In the state of New York, an applicant has a good chance of approval (almost 50%) at a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), which is better than the current national average. Due to New York's huge population, applicants will have to wait longer to receive a hearing date or a final decision about their case. There are precisely 102 judges that attend hearings throughout New York's 10 hearing offices. Here are some statistics about NY hearing offices.
New York | National | |
Avg. Hearing Wait Time | 16.2 Months | 14.9 Months |

New York State Supplements for SSI
The maximum amount of benefits a recipient of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can receive from the Social Security Administration (SSA) is currently $733 per month. However, it is possible for recipients of SSI to also receive an additional benefit from the state they live in on top of their SSI payments. These benefits are known as State Supplemental benefits.
The amount of additional benefits a recipient can receive depends on their current living situation. A non-married recipient can potentially receive an additional $87 per month and a married recipient could receive an additional $104 per month. If a recipient is living under family care, residential care, or enhanced residential care, they may be eligible for a larger amount of additional state benefits.
